The process of assessing a road reserve before construction begins

Most people consult land surveyors when preparing for construction work to build homes or commercial buildings. During this process, surveyors establish the actual boundaries of the property, determine how suitable the land is for construction and assess the overall impact of the project on the environment.

However, land surveyors also come in handy during road construction. They can assess the condition of a road reserve to determine how effective the construction project will be, how much traffic the road can handle and what the overall environmental impact will look like. When surveyors are assessing a road reserve, they typically carry out four important steps before construction begins.

1. A description of the overall environment

When a piece of land is identified as a road reserve, surveyors first need to assess the surrounding environment to determine if it's suitable for road construction. They will begin by identifying the path intended for the road, the nature of the surrounding population and any environmental features such as rivers, forests, hills/mountains, etc.

In preparing this information, surveyors typically carry out a lot of data collection. They collect data regarding the current ownership of surrounding properties, the current traffic flow in the area and how local regulations will apply to the construction of the road itself

2. Identifying the needs of the road to be constructed

Once the surrounding environment of the road has been assessed, surveyors will proceed to identify any risk factors that may affect the construction of the road. For example, they will begin by determining if the road will be able to handle high traffic flow.

This information will determine the number of lanes to be constructed, the width of the road and signage to be used. Surveyors may also assess the risk of roadside objects such as rocks, trees and water bodies.

3. Determining what permits will be required

Surveyors also help you determine the permits that will be required to construct a road. You may need permits for clearing vegetation, digging foundations and carrying out general construction work in certain areas. With these permits clearly outlined, it will be easier for you to plan the project moving forward.

4. Assessing the effects of the road on the surrounding environment

With environmental conservation being a hot topic in recent years, most land surveyors will also carry out an environmental impact assessment for the road reserve. This means that they will determine what effect the road will have on the surrounding environment.

From biodiversity assessments to wetlands, trees and watercourses, surveyors will assess the overall impact and suggest how you can mitigate environmental degradation during your construction project.

Before I called in a team of landscaping contractors, I had no idea about the benefits of landscaping. However, I was really unhappy with the way the grounds of my property looked. The team were great and they helped me to plan how I wanted to change the grounds. I learnt a great deal and I hope by sharing it with you I can help you to landscape your property.
